Restricted Electrical Licence (QLD)

A Restricted Electrical Licence authorises the holder to perform electrical work of a particular type stated on their licence. This licence limits an individual to specific electrical work associated with work from another trade or calling.

This course has been designed for trade persons who wish to obtain a Restricted Electrical Work licence from the Electrical Safety Office (ESO). The Restricted Electrical Work Licence allows trade persons to complete electrical work involved with their job.

Examples of trades and callings that may be eligible for a restricted electrical work licence include:

  • Refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment tradespeople
  • Motor and armature rewinders
  • Electronic equipment technicians
  • Gas fitters
  • Instrumentation/process control tradespeople
  • Mechanical fitters
  • Plumbers

The Australian Trade Training College offers individuals and groups of employees, training in the specified units to obtain a restricted electrical licence in Queensland.

On successful completion of the required units of competency, a Statement of Attainment will be issued.

Units of Competency

The units required for each candidate in this short course, are determined by the Electrical Safety Office Queensland upon application of a ‘Training Permit.’

To be awarded the Restricted Electrical Licence, competency may need to be achieved in 1 or more of the following units of competency:

  • UEERL0001 Attach cords and plugs to electrical equipment for connection to a single phase 230 Volt supply
  • UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • UEERL0004 Disconnect – reconnect electrical equipment connected to low voltage (LV) installation wiring
  • UEERL0005 Locate and rectify faults in low voltage (LV) electrical equipment using set procedures
  • UEERL0002 Attach cords, cables and plugs to electrical equipment for connection to 1000 V a.c. or 1500 V d.c.

Pre-requisite

A restricted electrical work licence (a restricted licence) authorises the holder to perform electrical work only of a particular type stated in the licence. An applicant for a restricted licence must be able to demonstrate an occupational need to carry out restricted electrical work incidental to a particular trade or calling.

All applicants in the first instance, are to contact the Queensland Electrical Safety Office on 1300 362 128 and discuss with them their eligibility to hold one of the trades or callings, and whether their personal employment requirements allow this.

Applicants will need to have obtained a twelve (12) month Training Permit from the Electrical Safety Office QLD to enable enrolment to occur.

Section 44 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 describes the eligibility requirements for a restricted electrical work licence.
