The Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade assists in providing the knowledge and skills to select and perform welding processes, form and shape materials and work safely and effectively within the engineering and manufacturing industries. 

Apprentice drilling in a fabrication business

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate of $1.60 per nominal hour. Concession rates may apply for students under 25 or who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training. Information regarding costs will be outlined on the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at time of induction.

The Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade is a qualification completed through an apprenticeship offering two different options, boilermaking / welding or sheetmetal working. Work safely and effectively in manufacturing and engineering work situations, interpret technical drawing, carry out measurements, perform calculations, and select, use and maintain hand and power tools. Select the appropriate welding process to achieve a specified outcome through identifying the properties of commonly used metals, effects of welding, distortion prevention measures and alternative joining methods. Safely perform routine manual metal arc, flux core arc, gas tungsten arc and gas metal arc welding. Follow specifications and drawings, prepare and operate equipment and use fabrication and hot or cold forming techniques to form and shape material. Boilermaking / Welding  Perform advanced welding including: identify job requirements, prepare materials, select welding equipment and weld joints using manual metal arc, gas metal arc and flux core arc welding processes.    Sheetmetal working  Safely select, use, assemble and check fabrications using sheet and plate assembly equipment.   Select and apply appropriate finishing and polishing procedure in line with surface finish specifications.    Possible Employment Pathways for Boilermaking / Welding:

Requirements for completion of this qualification

Units of Competency 

Boilermaking / Welding 

To be awarded this qualification, competency must be achieved in 29 units of competency: 

  • Twelve (12) core units of competency 
  • Seventeen (17) elective units 

Sheetmetal working 

To be awarded this qualification, competency must be achieved in 30 units of competency: 

  • Twelve (12) core units of competency 
  • Eighteen (18) elective units 

Pre-requisite 

There are no pre-requisites for entry into this qualification. 

Resources 

Access to a computer/laptop and internet, a video and audio recording device (e.g. smart phone or web cam) and current email address.
