Participants will develop the skills to:

  • Work safely in an engineering environment, adhering to workplace health and safety protocols.
  • Use basic hand tools and power tools commonly employed in engineering tasks.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Carry out basic machining operations, including grinding, turning, and milling.
  • Perform basic welding and fabrication tasks using various methods.
  • Understand materials, their properties, and applications in engineering.
  • Follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team in a workshop or industrial setting.

This qualification is ideal for individuals starting their career in engineering, equipping them with the essential skills to undertake entry-level tasks across a range of roles. To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:

Twelve (12) units of competency made up of:

  • all four (4) core units of competency listed below and
  • a minimum of seven (7) Group A electives and
  • a maximum of one (1) Group B elective as described below.

Entry requirements

Some units of competency within this training program may involve physical activities, such as heavy lifting, standing for extended periods, or operating machinery, which may present challenges for individuals with physical limitations.

Students are encouraged to discuss any physical limitations or specific needs with our support team prior to enrolment so that reasonable adjustments can be considered to support their participation in the training program while maintaining the integrity of assessment outcomes.

As part of the enrolment process, you will need to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy indicator Assessment. This assessment is used for reviewing your suitability for this course.

What resources do I need?

    • Hi Visibility Shirt or Vest
    • Enclosed footwear (steel cap preferred)
    • Long pants and long sleeve shirt
    • Safety glasses 
    • Hearing protection

If students do not have a Hard Hat or Safety glasses: ATTC will provide for use if necessary.

The VET in Schools Program has been designed to help you make good career and training choices, so you can leave school career-ready, informed and confident in what your future holds. VETiS offers a training pathway so that you can complete either a Certificate I or II while you are at school.

Career Start Program

The Career Start Program provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career. The program provides training to help individuals find a job and supports those already employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment, including after completing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Career Start offers either a general training pathway or employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.

Course Outcome

Students who are deemed competent in all units of competency will receive a Qualification and Students who are deemed competent in some units of competency only within this course will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Qualification or Statement is issued by Australian Trade Training College (RTO 31399)
