Qualified Technical Person (QTP) Course

This course is designed to equip Students with the essential knowledge and skills required to become a Qualified Technical Person (QTP) for a Queensland Electrical Contractors Licence. A valid and eligible QTP is mandatory for every electrical contractor and is critical for maintaining safe and compliant electrical work practices across the state.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the Role and Responsibilities: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the essential role, responsibilities, and eligibility criteria for QTPs nominated on a Queensland electrical contractor licence.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Learn about the licensing and competency requirements necessary to become a QTP.
  • Fit and Proper Person Requirements: Ensure QTPs are fit and proper persons to carry out supervisory and technical roles effectively.
  • Support and Resources: Learn how to support the QTP in fulfilling their responsibilities through adequate time, resources, and access to systems.
  • Compliance with ESO Notifications: Understand the notification requirements to the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) when there are changes in QTP status.
  • Active Involvement: Monitor and maintain the QTP’s active involvement in training, supervision, and technical oversight.

 Key Skills Participants Will Gain:

  • Eligibility Understanding: Master the eligibility criteria for QTPs, including licensing and competency requirements.
  • Supervisory and Technical Roles: Ensure QTPs are fit and proper persons to carry out supervisory and technical roles.
  • Support Mechanisms: Learn how to provide time, resources, and access to systems to support QTPs in their roles.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Gain insights into the notification requirements to the ESO when QTP status changes.
  • Training and Supervision: Develop skills to monitor and maintain the QTP’s active involvement in training, supervision, and technical oversight.

This course is applicable to electrical contractors and QTPs operating in Queensland, including sole traders, partnerships, and corporations. It provides clarity on the legal obligations and practical responsibilities of QTPs, ensuring safe systems of work, effective supervision, and ongoing compliance with Queensland’s electrical safety framework.

On successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued for the following Units of Competency:

  • UEEEL0002 Apply currency of safe working practices and compliance verification of electrical installations
  • UEEEL0030 Conduct compliance inspection of single phase LV electrical installations
  • UEEEL0029 Conduct compliance inspection of LV electrical installations with demand exceeding 100 A per phase

  • Option 1 – Three (3) Days Face to Face Training on Campus
  • Option 2 – Blended learning.  Online theory completed prior to attending one day face to face training on campus

As part of the enrolment process, you will need to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy indicator Assessment. This assessment is used for reviewing your suitability for this course.

What resources do I need?

  • Laptop
  • Internet access
  • Students must provide their own Australian Standards (Paper or digital formats acceptable)
  • PPE such as
    • Safety Glasses
    • Safety Boots
    • Gloves
    • Long sleeve shirt and pants
  • It is requested that students provide their own:
    • Calibrated multimeter
    • An insulation tester with 250v, and 500v minimum ranges
    • Hand tools such as:
      •  Screwdrivers – slotted and Philips
      •  Pliers
      •  Side cutters

These above tools can be provided for use at training if required

Course Outcome

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Australian Trade Training College (RTO 31399)

Where a student has a disability or learning difficulty, assessors will apply Australian Trade Training College reasonable adjustment to ensure that the student is not presented with artificial barriers to progress in the course.
