Frequently Asked Questions about Building and Construction Training

What building and construction courses are available in Queensland?

ATTC offers a full range of building and construction qualifications in Queensland, including the Certificate I in Construction as entry-level options, and full trade apprenticeships in carpentry, joinery, cabinet making and shopfitting. We also offer the Certificate IV in Building and Construction for those moving into supervisory and project management roles, and short courses in civil construction plant operation.

How do I become a qualified carpenter in Queensland?

To become a qualified carpenter, you need to complete a Certificate III in Carpentry through a four-year apprenticeship with a building employer. ATTC can help connect you with employers in Queensland. You will also need a white card (General Construction Induction) before working on construction sites, and ATTC can assist you in obtaining one as part of your enrolment.

What is the difference between carpentry and joinery?

Carpentry focuses on structural building work: constructing frameworks, walls, floors, roofs and structural installations on construction sites. Joinery is a more detailed trade focused on the manufacture and installation of architectural timber products such as window frames, door frames, staircases and fitted components, typically in a workshop setting with on-site installation. Both are separate trade qualifications. The Certificate III in Carpentry leads to a carpenterโ€™s licence, while the Certificate III in Joinery qualifies you as a joiner.

How long does a building and construction apprenticeship take?

The Certificate III in Carpentry, Joinery, Cabinet Making and Shopfitting are all 48-month (four-year) apprenticeship qualifications. The pathway qualifications (Certificate I and II) are flexible and can be completed during the school year or as a short pre-apprenticeship program.

Is building and construction training government funded in Queensland?

Yes. Building and construction apprenticeships at ATTC are delivered under the Queensland Governmentโ€™s Career Start Program, which subsidises training costs for eligible apprentices. Apprentices under 25 may be eligible for the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s initiative, which covers the full cost of training. Visit our Funding and Fees page for details.

Do I need a white card to start a construction apprenticeship?

Yes. Anyone working on a construction site in Queensland is required to hold a General Construction Induction (white card). ATTC can assist apprentices in obtaining their white card as part of the enrolment process for carpentry and other construction trade qualifications. Speak to our team about how to arrange this before your training begins.

Are Australian Trade Training College building and construction qualifications nationally recognised?

Yes. All qualifications delivered by ATTC are nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). ATTC operates as a registered training organisation (RTO 31399) and issues certification when competency is achieved. Your qualification is accepted by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) and recognised by employers across Australia.
