Operate breathing apparatus

This nationally recognised short course equips participants with the essential skills to safely operate breathing apparatus in hazardous, oxygen-deficient, or irrespirable environments. Whether you’re working in confined spaces, responding to emergencies, or managing industrial risks, this training ensures you’re prepared to protect yourself and others.

Delivered by experienced Emergency Services instructors, the course aligns with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and Australian WHS legislation, focusing on real-world application and best practice.

What You’ll Learn

Students will gain hands-on experience in:

• Conducting pre-donning inspections and functional checks
• Safely donning, operating, and removing SCBA and airline systems
• Identifying atmospheric hazards and applying control measures
• Responding to entrapment and equipment failure scenarios
• Communicating effectively under pressure
• Cleaning, maintaining, and storing breathing apparatus

Some units of competency within this training program may involve physical activities, such as heavy lifting, standing for extended periods, or operating machinery, which may present challenges for individuals with physical limitations.

Students are encouraged to discuss any physical limitations or specific needs with our support team prior to enrolment so that reasonable adjustments can be considered to support their participation in the training program while maintaining the integrity of assessment outcomes.

As part of the enrolment process, you will need to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy indicator Assessment. This assessment is used for reviewing your suitability for this course.

Full PPE Clothing

• Enclosed footwear (steel cap preferred)
• Long pants and long sleeve shirt – Hi Visibility Shirt or Vest
• Hard Hat 
• Safety glasses

If students do not have a Hard Hat or Safety glasses: ATTC will provide for use if necessary.

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Australian Trade Training College (RTO 31399)

Where a student has a disability or learning difficulty, assessors will apply Australian Trade Training College reasonable adjustment to ensure that the student is not presented with artificial barriers to progress in the course. Reasonable adjustments may include the use of adaptive technology, educational support, verbal assessment, etc.

We will provide support to each student’s individual needs, providing additional educational and wellness support required for the student to meet the requirements of their training course.
