Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (up to 20 tonnes)

The TLILIC0022 Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (up to 20 tonnes) is a nationally accredited course designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a slewing mobile crane in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, Australian Standards, and site-specific procedures. Delivered by experienced trainers at our Brisbane and Toowoomba training campuses, this course is ideal for individuals working in construction, civil infrastructure, mining, quarrying, and other high-risk industries.

This course prepares students to apply for a High Risk Work Licence (C2 class) and includes both theoretical and practical training to ensure participants are confident and competent in real-world crane operations.

What You’ll Learn

Students will develop the ability to:

• Plan and prepare for crane operations, including hazard identification and risk control
• Conduct pre-operational checks and equipment inspections
• Set up, position, and stabilise the crane safely
• Operate the crane to lift, transfer, and lower loads using appropriate movements
• Interpret and apply load charts, signals, and communication methods
• Respond to unplanned or unsafe situations and workplace emergencies
• Shut down and secure the crane post-operation
• Maintain accurate records and comply with site documentation requirements

Course Content

• Understanding slewing mobile crane components and functions
• Hazard identification and implementation of control measures
• Load assessment, calculations, and crane capacity
• Crane setup, including outriggers/stabilisers and packing
• Communication techniques: hand signals, whistles, and two-way radios
• Emergency procedures and fault reporting
• WHS legislation, codes of practice, and site safety protocols
• Post-operational checks and shutdown procedures

Course Requirements

To enrol, participants must:

• Be 18 years or older
• Be able to read, write, and understand English
• Provide valid identification as per WorkSafe requirements
• Wear mandatory PPE: safety boots, high-visibility shirt/vest, and hard hat

Certification & Licensing

Successful participants will receive:

• A Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0022
• A High Risk Work Licence (C2) issued by the relevant WHS authority upon application

Workplace Delivery

Competence in this unit does not in itself result in a licence. A licence is obtained after competence is assessed under applicable Commonwealth, state or territory work health and safety (WHS) regulations.

Successful completion of this course will allow Students to apply for the high-risk work licence – class C2.

Completion of training does not automatically grant a licence. Participants must apply for their HRWL within 60 days of assessment.

Some units of competency within this training program may involve physical activities, such as heavy lifting, standing for extended periods, or operating machinery, which may present challenges for individuals with physical limitations.

Students are encouraged to discuss any physical limitations or specific needs with our support team prior to enrolment so that reasonable adjustments can be considered to support their participation in the training program while maintaining the integrity of assessment outcomes.

As part of the enrolment process, you will need to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Literacy indicator Assessment. This assessment is used for reviewing your suitability for this course.

The minimum level required for entry to this Course is:

• Laptop
• Internet access
• Full PPE Clothing
  • Enclosed footwear (steel cap preferred)
  • Long pants and long sleeve shirt
  • Hi Visibility Shirt or Vest
  • Hard Hat 
  • Safety glasses 

If students do not have a Hard Hat or Safety glasses: ATTC will provide for use if necessary.

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Australian Trade Training College (RTO 31399)

Crane Operator

Where a student has a disability or learning difficulty, assessors will apply Australian Trade Training College reasonable adjustment to ensure that the student is not presented with artificial barriers to progress in the course.

Reasonable adjustments may include the use of adaptive technology, educational support, verbal assessment, etc.

We will provide support to each student’s individual needs, providing additional educational and wellness support required for the student to meet the requirements of their training course.
